Hinsdale Mahjong Society Foundations: A Confident Start to American Mahjong

Hinsdale Mahjong Society Foundations

HMS Mahjong Society Foundations is a welcoming, thoughtfully structured class designed to give you the skills and confidence to join a 4-week session or open play with ease.

In this 2-hour guided class, you’ll learn:

  • The structure of the game and how a round flows

  • Tile names, suits, and the NMJL card basics

  • How to deal, organize your rack, and read potential hands

  • Key terms like pungs, kongs, jokers, and Charleston

  • Strategy basics so you’re not just playing — you’re thinking

This class is perfect for:

  • True beginners

  • Anyone who has “sort of learned” before but wants clarity

  • Women who want to confidently join HMS Sessions or Open Play

You’ll leave with a foundational understanding of the game, printed reference materials, and the confidence to sit down at a table without feeling overwhelmed.

Light snacks will be provided.

Ready to Continue?

For those who want to turn learning into consistent play, a limited number of seats are available in the April 4-Week Night Session.

You may register for Foundations only ($65), or choose the Foundations + April Series ($200) and continue building your skills in a supportive, elevated environment.

Your registration for Foundations + April Session reserves your seat for the full April Session: April 7, April 14, April 21, and April 28.

If life happens (which it does and is understandable!), please provide notice so we may offer your evening seat to someone on the alternate player list. It is okay to miss a session; there is no penalty — this is not that type of group.

In the event you need to miss a session, and have given 7 days notice, you are eligible to receive one make-up credit for a missed week per league session at a future open play (space permitting).
